Apply for a Direct Loan

Students interested in a Direct Loan must complete the FAFSA application to determine if they qualify for federal student loans.  Students interested in a PLUS loan must also complete and submit a supplemental PLUS loan that determines a borrower’s creditworthiness.

When students complete and submit the FAFSA, Free Application for Federal Student Aid, they will become eligible to receive either a Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, Direct PLUS loan, or both.  Depending on the student’s financial status, they may also be eligible to receive a Subsidized Stafford Loan, which is given to low-income students.

Direct Loan Application
Students must complete and submit the FAFSA by their state’s deadline.  Each state has a different FAFSA deadline date, so it’s important to know your state’s FAFSA deadline.

Your state’s FAFSA deadline date will show within your application if you complete the FAFSA online or if you complete the paper application.  If you are unable to complete the application before the deadline then you must complete and submit a FAFSA extension form to still be considered for federal student aid.
Student’s that complete their application online must have a FAFSA PIN to successfully submit their application to the Direct Loan Program.  The FAFSA PIN is a student’s unique identification number and is the student’s electronic signature.  If you’ve forgotten your four-digit FAFSA PIN then you can request a new PIN that will be mailed to your address on-file.

Once your application has been submitted online then you will receive an email confirmation indicating that the Direct Loan Program has received your application.  Students that plan to use regular mail to submit their application should request for a return receipt, which indicates that the program physically received your application.
